“Sarah said, ‘God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.’” — Genesis 21:6 (NIV)

In Genesis 21:6, Sarah joyfully acknowledges the miraculous birth of Isaac. After years of waiting and facing ridicule for being barren, God fulfilled His promise, and her laughter was one of joy, celebration, and triumph. Sarah’s laughter was shared with those who rejoiced in God’s faithfulness.

This teaches us an important principle: there is a difference between people laughing with you and people laughing at you.

Laughing with you brings Encouragement, support, and celebrating your successes. These are people who genuinely rejoice in your victories and blessings. On the other hand, laughing at you means Mockery, belittling, and sometimes is rooted in jealousy. These are the voices that try to discourage you or make you feel ashamed for what God is doing in your life.

Sarah’s laughter became a testimony, and she knew that those who rejoiced with her were part of her journey of faith. When God fulfills His promises, true friends celebrate your miracle, while naysayers will mock what they cannot understand.

Consider Joseph in Genesis chapter 41. Before rising to prominence, his brothers mocked and sold him into slavery. But when Joseph eventually became the second-in-command in Egypt, he laughed—not in ridicule—but in thanksgiving and joy over God’s faithfulness. Meanwhile, those who had mocked him earlier—his brothers—realized the depth of their mistake. This shows the contrast between people who celebrate your blessings and those who deride them.

Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, thank You for every blessing You have brought into my life. Help me to discern between those who truly rejoice with me and those who mock or envy me. Fill my heart with joy, laughter, and thanksgiving, and let me celebrate Your goodness without fear or shame. Surround me with people who lift me up and encourage my walk with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
