“Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.’” — Genesis 22:2 (NIV)
Genesis 22 is one of the most profound chapters in the Bible, showing Abraham’s unwavering faith and love for God. God asked Abraham to do what seemed impossible: to offer his only son, Isaac, the child of promise. This test was not about God needing Abraham’s son, but about Abraham’s heart and devotion.
Abraham’s love for God was genuine and unconditional. He obeyed without hesitation, showing that his relationship with God was not based on personal gain, blessings, or convenience. His faith was rooted in trust and love, not in what God could do for him.
The Heart of True Devotion
True love for God is selfless. It is demonstrated not when everything is going well, but when God asks something costly or difficult. Abraham’s obedience teaches us that:
- God desires our hearts, not just our resources or service.
- Faith is shown through trust and surrender, even when the outcome is uncertain.
- Genuine devotion often requires stepping out in obedience without fully understanding the plan.
A perfect example of genuine love and obedience is Jesus in Philippians 2:8. He humbled Himself and obeyed God to the point of death on the cross. His love for the Father and for humanity was not motivated by gain, comfort, or advantage—it was pure, sacrificial, and transformative.
Like Abraham, genuine love for God is shown in surrender and obedience, regardless of the personal cost.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Abraham’s unwavering love for You. Help me to love You genuinely, not for blessings, favors, or personal gain, but because You are God and worthy of all my devotion. Teach me to trust You fully, obey without hesitation, and surrender my life into Your hands. Let my love for You be sincere, steadfast, and pleasing in Your sight. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
