At the very beginning of creation, the Bible paints a picture of deep darkness and emptiness. The earth was formless and void, and there seemed to be nothing good, nothing bright, nothing beautiful. Yet, right there — in that moment of chaos and confusion — the Spirit of God was present, hovering over the waters.
“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” — Genesis 1:2 (NIV)
That simple truth carries an eternal message: God’s presence is not absent in your darkness. Even when it feels like nothing is working, when life seems empty or hopeless, God is there — preparing to bring forth His light.
Before God spoke light into existence, He was already there. Before the order came, His Spirit was already moving. This means your current darkness is not a sign of God’s absence; it’s a sign that a transformation is about to happen.
Think about Joseph. He went through betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment — years that must have felt like total darkness. But God was with him all along. Every dark season was preparing Joseph for a brighter future — a future that would not only save nations but also show the world God’s power and faithfulness (Genesis 50:20).
Just like Joseph, your dark moments may not make sense right now, but they are part of a divine process. The same God who turned the void into creation, who brought Joseph from prison to the palace, will bring light into your situation.
Darkness is never the end of the story. In Genesis 1:3, God said, “Let there be light,” and light came forth instantly. When God speaks into your situation, transformation happens. Your “formless” and “empty” season can become a testimony of His glory.
So, don’t lose heart. What looks like the end might just be the beginning of something new. The same Spirit that hovered over the dark waters in Genesis is hovering over your life — waiting to create beauty from what seems broken.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being present even in my darkest moments. I may not always see what You are doing, but I know You are near. Just as You spoke light into the darkness at creation, speak light into every area of my life that feels empty or hopeless. Turn my chaos into order, my pain into purpose, and use my life to show how powerful and mighty You are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
