Who Do You Believe? (A Short Story)

Kenneth, a 15-year-old boy has been lying on his sick-bed for 6-months now, he was admitted to the hospital days before his 15th birthday and has since been stuck on this particular bed day and night.

Kenneth who happens to be the only child of a Baptist Deacon was reading the Bible his mother gave to him on his 15th birthday when he came across a Bible passage; Mark 11:24; "Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them".

"Mummy," Kenneth quickly called his mother who has been sitting at the corner of his bed to come closer, as fast as his lips can go, he asked, "Mummy, do you believe that through prayer, I can be well again?" his mother was surprise, she is a Deaconess for crying out loud, Kenneth knows how much emphases she puts on the importance of prayers while speaking in church. Despite the puzzle the question arose in her heart, she still answers her son in a cool and calm way: "Yes" she said, "We have been doing that (praying) for the past six months".

Kenneth shows a sign of surprise through a frown, "Why then am I still here if you have been doing that for six months?" he asked. Kenneth mother paused for a while, she felt like crying, she looked away from her son and fought back the tears, she looked at Kenneth at a glance, "God knows best" she managed to say to the young man who could only watch his mother from his sick bed.

Mrs. Jesusegun returned to her position (at the corner of the bed), she ponders on what Kenneth has said, "I will call on the Pastor to come pray for you, I believe that God will hear his prayers and heal you". Kenneth shook his head in agreement, a call was put through to the Pastor; "Sorry, I am a little busy today" the pastor says, "I will come see him when I get back to Lagos". The pastor was in Ogbomosho, Osun State for a Conference, he would come back to Lagos in two days.

Two days later, Kenneth's mother was waiting for the Pastor to come, Kenneth and his mother waited all day but the Pastor never showed up. Crushed with disappointment and disillusionment, Kenneth gave up, he died.

On Sunday, the news of his death got to the pastor and he said to the mother: "I am sorry ma, I was too tired to come as I was just returning from a long journey, I am so deeply sorry for your loss, Kenneth was a truly special person to me". He concluded with the popular word: "MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PERFECT PEACE".

Lesson Learnt
From the story of Kenneth, I see how foolish it was to send for someone to ask if God really means what he has said in the Bible.

What IF the mother took it upon herself to pray for her son? What do you think might have happened? But, she did pray before you might want to say, YES, you are right, but when the faith germinated in the son's heart, a word of prayer to connect to that germinated faith would have been all they need.

A person can cry, pray and do everything he/she knows how to do, but, if he/she doesn't have faith or know how to exercise faith, he will remain the same.
In the verse of the Bible, Mark 11:24; Jesus didn't say PRAY! The keyword in the Bible verse is BELIEVE! God's word is there for you, connect your faith to it, pray for whatever thing you desire and believe that God is able to do it.
